President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended his deepest condolences to Bangladesh following a series of catastrophic floods and landslides that have claimed at least 44 lives across the country.
In a message addressed to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, President Muizzu expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life and offered sincere sympathies to the bereaved families. The President also wished a speedy recovery to those injured and expressed hope for the safe rescue of individuals still reported missing.
Highlighting the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations, President Muizzu described Bangladesh as a close and friendly neighbor. He emphasized that the people of the Maldives stand in firm solidarity with Bangladesh as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the disaster.
The tragedy was triggered by days of relentless heavy rainfall, which sparked widespread flooding and landslides. The impact has been most severe in the districts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj. Reports indicate that more than one million people have been stranded or otherwise affected by the deluge.
The scale of the destruction is immense, with authorities reporting that approximately 267,918 households have been inundated. The flooding has severely disrupted daily life, destroying kitchens and homes, leaving many residents unable to prepare basic meals.
Relief operations are currently underway, though emergency services face significant hurdles. Widespread power outages have hampered rescue efforts as authorities struggle to reach isolated communities and provide essential aid to those displaced by the rising waters.
