President Muizzu Sets Goal to Triple Fish Exports by Year 2033

World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced an ambitious government target to triple the export of fish products by 2033, framing the development of the fisheries industry as a primary national priority. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the People’s National Congress (PNC) Congress 2026, the President emphasized that fishing remains vital to the Maldivian people's livelihood. He outlined a strategic vision to strengthen national fisheries policy and expand infrastructure to ensure the sustainable use of the country's marine resources. Addressing previous financial bottlenecks, President Muizzu noted that his administration inherited a debt of USD 16.2 million owed to fishermen. Since taking office, the government has cleared these arrears and released total payments exceeding USD 64.8 million to the sector. The President highlighted a significant improvement in payment efficiency, stating that fishermen are now typically paid within 48 hours, with rates sometimes exceeding the promised USD 1.29 per kilogram. To support these growth targets, the government is currently implementing several infrastructure projects. Efforts are underway to increase the capacity of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), the state-owned enterprise responsible for fish procurement and exports. These upgrades aim to streamline the supply chain and enhance the operational capacity of the industry. Furthermore, the administration is working to improve essential logistics for fishing communities across the archipelago. Specific focus is being placed on increasing fishermen’s access to fuel and ice in various regions, reducing the logistical burdens that previously hindered productivity in remote atolls.
