President Muizzu Submits Asset Recovery Bill to Curb Illicit Financial Gains
World ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has submitted the Asset Recovery Bill to the Parliament, aiming to dismantle the financial incentives of criminal activity by preventing offenders from profiting from illegally obtained assets.
In a statement shared on X, the President explained that the proposed legislation is designed to establish a comprehensive legal framework for the confiscation and recovery of property and assets linked to criminal enterprises. The bill seeks to close critical gaps in existing laws that have previously hindered the state's ability to seize the proceeds of serious crimes.
According to the President, the current lack of a robust asset-recovery system allows criminals to hide, transfer, or disguise the origins of illicit funds. This systemic weakness has enabled individuals to accumulate vast amounts of illegal wealth while shielding their assets from judicial reach.
This legislative move aligns with ongoing efforts by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which has been developing an Asset Recovery Model Law. The ACC's framework provides detailed procedures for the identification and seizure of money and property tied to corruption and other criminal acts.
By formalizing these processes through the Asset Recovery Bill, the government intends to ensure that crime does not pay. The bill's implementation would provide the Maldivian state with more potent tools to track financial trails and reclaim stolen public funds, strengthening the overall integrity of the nation's legal and financial systems.
