President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the relocation of the Male’ Commercial Harbour to the industrial island of Thilafushi will serve as a primary catalyst for the Maldives' economic growth. The President stated that the project is essential for boosting national productivity and providing local businesses with the infrastructure necessary to scale. During a recent inspection of the development site, the President expressed satisfaction with the project's rapid progress. He was accompanied by Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed, and CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Hussain Shafeeq. The visit included a review of completed milestones and a briefing on future timelines from the executing Chinese firm. President Muizzu emphasized that the current commercial port in Male’ can no longer sustain the pace of the country's economic expansion. With a surge of major development projects arriving in the Maldives, the President noted that a modernized port is crucial to facilitate this growth. The new facility is expected to expand operational services fourfold, significantly increasing the capacity for trade and logistics. As a transitional measure, certain port operations will temporarily shift to a designated area within the Male’ Industrial Zone. The government has set an ambitious deadline to fully relocate all port services to Thilafushi by November 11, 2025. Progress is already visible, with work on the domestic key wall entering its final stages. Services from this specific section are expected to become operational later this month. The President concluded by praising the collaboration between state enterprises, relevant ministries, and international partners. He described the modernized hub as the most critical infrastructure endeavor currently underway to enhance the commerce and productivity of the nation.
