President Muizzu Targets November 2025 Opening for Thilafushi Port Relocation

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has identified the relocation of the Male' Commercial Harbour to the industrial island of Thilafushi as the administration's most critical infrastructure project. Speaking on 'The Pulse' podcast series, the President emphasized that the initiative is the government's highest priority and is expected to provide the most significant boost to the Maldivian economy. The government has set an ambitious deadline to open the facility by November 11 next year. President Muizzu noted that all relevant stakeholders are collaborating closely to ensure work progresses strongly toward this target. Relocating the harbour is a cornerstone of the President's economic pledges, designed to provide a permanent solution to the severe space constraints currently hindering operations at the existing Male' Commercial Harbour. By moving the hub of trade to Thilafushi, the government aims to eliminate bottlenecks and modernize the nation's maritime logistics. The new port is envisioned as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility built to international standards. It is designed to adapt to modern shipping developments and establish a comprehensive logistics system capable of providing uninterrupted, 24-hour services to the archipelago. Key features of the Thilafushi development include a modern container terminal and specialized multi-purpose terminals. To enhance food security and trade efficiency, the project will also incorporate bonded warehouses and cold-storage facilities specifically for perishable goods, ensuring a more resilient supply chain for the Maldives.
