President Muizzu to Tackle Sri Lankan Visa Hurdles During State Visit

Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is set to address the persistent visa challenges facing Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka during an upcoming state visit from May 3 to 6. The visit comes at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and aims to resolve long-standing immigration frictions. Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef revealed that discussions regarding these visa complications have been ongoing for two years, beginning with a previous meeting between the two heads of state in Dubai. According to Shareef, the current difficulties stem from stringent regulations implemented by Sri Lankan authorities following the Easter Sunday attacks. A primary focus of the diplomatic talks will be the high cost of maintaining legal residency. Maldivians currently face significant financial burdens, including visa extension fees of approximately USD 200 for a one-year period, a USD 75 medical fee, and a mandatory security deposit of USD 1,000 per person. Beyond high-level diplomatic negotiations, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet directly with the Maldivian community in Sri Lanka to hear their firsthand grievances and concerns. This engagement underscores the administration's commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens abroad. The state visit is not limited to immigration issues; it also serves as a catalyst for economic cooperation. An investment forum will be held to foster ties between Maldivian and Sri Lankan businesses, creating new avenues for trade and partnership. The visit is expected to culminate in the signing of at least seven bilateral agreements, strengthening the strategic relationship between the two neighboring Indian Ocean nations.
