President Muizzu Unveils Vaahaka Vau Heritage Trail to Honor National Hero

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated "Vaahaka Vau," an immersive heritage installation in Utheemu, Haa Alifu Atoll, designed to honor the legacy of the national hero Bodu Thakurufaanu. The project was unveiled during the President's visit to the island for National Day celebrations. Located within the natural forest adjacent to the historic Kandhuvalu Mosque, the installation transforms the island's lush greenery into a living history lesson. The trail features 14 sequentially placed information boards that guide visitors through the pivotal events of the 16th century, starting from the Portuguese seizure of Male’ in 1558 and culminating in the decisive victory of 1573. A key highlight of the narrative is the construction of the Kalhuoffummi, the legendary sailboat built in Baarah that played a critical role in the liberation of the Maldives from Portuguese rule. By embedding these educational panels within the forest, the project merges art and nature to create a contemplative experience for visitors. According to the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, the project aligns with President Muizzu’s strategic vision to prioritize nationalism and preserve the legacy of Ghaazee Bandaarain. The government aims to transform Utheemu into a premier hub for cultural tourism, leveraging the island's historical significance to create sustainable economic opportunities. Beyond its educational value, the Ministry anticipates that the heritage trail will drive growth for the local community. By attracting more domestic and international tourists and extending their stay on the island, the initiative is expected to boost demand for local guesthouses, cafes, transport services, and traditional artisan crafts. By blending historical storytelling with the serene beauty of Utheemu’s environment, Vaahaka Vau seeks to inspire younger generations of Maldivians while establishing new economic pathways through the preservation of national heritage.
