President Muizzu Urges Citizens to Cultivate Virtues to Safeguard National Independence

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivian citizens to embody virtues of integrity and loyalty as a fundamental necessity for preserving the nation's independence. Speaking at an official ceremony commemorating the 61st Independence Day of the Maldives, the President emphasized that the strength of the state relies on the moral character of its people. During the address, President Muizzu highlighted the importance of recognizing long-serving civil servants, noting that their careers are often defined by trustworthiness, diligence, and sincerity. He urged the broader public to adopt these same traits, arguing that national sovereignty is not merely a political status but a result of the collective character of the citizenry. Drawing on historical lessons, the President explained that past losses of independence were often the direct result of a lack of these foundational virtues. In contrast, he noted that the heroes who fought to reclaim the country's freedom were driven by these very qualities of dedication and selflessness. "I remind you that our noble religion of Islam, our mother tongue of Dhivehi, and our rich culture... are elements that each of us must firmly resolve within our hearts to revive and foster," President Muizzu stated. He stressed that the Maldives can only truly belong to its people if citizens prioritize the nation above individual interests and work in unity. Expanding on the concept of sovereignty, the President articulated that true independence extends beyond political boundaries. He maintained that genuine autonomy must be achieved across multiple dimensions, including foreign and domestic affairs, judicial independence, and the security of economic and social liberties. Concluding his address, President Muizzu underscored the critical role of foreign policy in sustaining the nation's freedom. He affirmed that his administration remains committed to prioritizing the overriding interests of the Maldivian people and the state above all other considerations in its international dealings.
