President Muizzu Urges Island States to Transform Climate Challenges into Business Innovation

Developing Small Island Developing States (SIDS) should transition from being viewed solely as climate-vulnerable nations to becoming global hubs for innovation and business opportunity, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum in the Maldives, President Muizzu argued that the traditional narrative surrounding island states focuses too heavily on environmental risks. He emphasized that this narrow perspective overlooks the capacity of these nations to turn systemic obstacles into innovative solutions and bridge the geographic divides inherent to island life. Highlighting the unique resilience of SIDS, the President suggested that small geographic size can be leveraged as a strategic advantage. He proposed that these nations serve as "laboratories" for testing new technologies and pioneering solutions that can be scaled globally. President Muizzu linked these ambitions to the 'Maldives 2.0' agenda, which utilizes technology to mitigate the challenges posed by the country's fragmented geography. As part of this economic shift, the government is providing targeted financial assistance to young entrepreneurs and startups, with a specific focus on empowering women-led businesses. To further integrate the Maldives into the global economy, the President highlighted the recently modernized Foreign Investment Act and the planned establishment of a Trade Acceleration Zone by 2027. He also noted strategic government efforts to expand the logistics sector and develop floating solar energy to ensure sustainable growth. Concluding his address, President Muizzu called upon the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) to strengthen the Global Business Network. He urged the UN to evolve the network into a central platform that connects the aspirations of island states with international investors, financial support, and emerging markets.
