President Muizzu Urges National Unity to Safeguard Maldives’ Sovereignty and Independence

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivians to renew their commitment to national sovereignty, warning that the country must remain vigilant against any threats to its independence. In a message shared on social media to mark National Day, the President emphasized that the occasion serves as a critical reminder to ensure the Maldives never again faces the instability and suffering associated with foreign domination. He urged citizens to reflect on the lessons of history to protect the nation's future. President Muizzu noted that National Day commemorates the victory of courageous national heroes who liberated the islands 467 years ago from the hardships of Portuguese colonial rule. He highlighted that the struggle for liberation was a turning point in the nation's identity, marking the end of a period of significant external suffering. Addressing the vulnerabilities of the past, the President observed that foreign control had historically been facilitated by internal betrayal. He stated that a significant number of individuals who lacked the nation's best interests at heart had contributed to previous periods of foreign influence, stressing that such painful experiences must never be repeated. Concluding his message, President Muizzu extended his greetings to the Maldivian people and called for a collective effort to uphold the principle of putting the nation first. He emphasized the importance of preserving the unique spirit and cultural identity of the Maldives in the hearts of the younger generation to ensure a resilient and independent future.
