President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for renewed regional cooperation among South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries. In a message to the SAARC Secretary-General on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the SAARC Charter, President Muizzu emphasized the urgent need to revitalize the association by restoring trust and convening the SAARC Summit. He highlighted that dialogue, unity, and cooperation are essential to unlocking South Asia’s full potential and improving the well-being of its people. Muizzu stressed that expanded collaboration is crucial for addressing global and regional challenges, including climate change, renewable energy promotion, public health systems, food security, inequality reduction, and inclusive economic growth. He also underscored the importance of a more robust SAARC institutional structure to tackle these issues efficiently. Concluding his message, the President reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to a cohesive, comprehensive, and future-focused SAARC that prioritizes collective interests and contributes to lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. SAARC Charter Day is observed annually on December 8th, marking the signing of the SAARC Charter in 1985 at the First SAARC Summit in Dhaka.
