President Muizzu Urges Voters to Back Pro-Government Council Candidates
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that local councils are an extension of the state's executive power, urging voters to support candidates aligned with the central government's development agenda in upcoming elections.
Speaking at the ruling People’s National Congress campaign headquarters, the President asserted that the nation's legal framework positions local councils within a unified executive structure. Their core function, he said, is to deliver public services through close cooperation with the government, not to act as independent oversight bodies.
With the administration preparing to launch major infrastructure projects to fulfil its pledges, President Muizzu warned of systemic dysfunction if councils are led by political opponents. He argued that internal conflict within the executive branch leads to gridlock, questioning whether rival-led councils would work to prevent development in their jurisdictions.
The President appealed to the public to set aside partisan politics, framing the local elections as a choice between progress and obstruction. He cautioned that electing officials who might impede government plans is tantamount to citizens hindering their own future prosperity. The call highlights the administration's focus on ensuring local governance aligns with its national development goals.
