President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed departed this afternoon for an official visit to Sri Lanka, scheduled from October 3 to 6. The visit comes at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and aims to deepen the strategic partnership between the two neighboring nations.
The President's itinerary includes high-level meetings with senior Sri Lankan officials. These discussions will focus on enhancing existing bilateral ties and exploring new opportunities for cooperation in critical sectors, including education, technical training, and economic collaboration. Both leaders also intend to align their positions within regional and international forums to better serve their mutual interests.
A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of several formal agreements designed to solidify cooperation across various sectors. In addition to diplomatic engagements, President Muizzu is scheduled to attend the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum, where he will engage with investors and entrepreneurs to drive economic growth. He will also spend time meeting with Maldivian nationals currently residing in Sri Lanka.
This official visit serves as a reciprocal gesture following President Dissanayake's visit to the Maldives from July 28 to 30, 2025. That previous encounter coincided with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which were formally established on July 26, 1965.
By focusing on tangible economic outcomes and educational exchanges, this visit is expected to reinforce the long-standing friendship and stability between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, ensuring continued cooperation in an evolving regional landscape.
