President Muizzu Welcomes Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for State Visit

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially welcomed Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday morning during a state visit aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations. The welcoming ceremony, held at Republic Square in Malé, commenced at the Izzuddin Jetty where the Prime Minister was greeted by President Muizzu and members of the Cabinet. The event featured a traditional cultural performance by Maldivian students, followed by a 21-gun salute and the playing of the national anthems of both the Maldives and Malaysia. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in the Maldives on Monday night at the invitation of President Muizzu. The high-level visit is centered on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for cooperation across various sectors. The two leaders are scheduled to hold official talks to discuss mutual interests and international collaboration. As part of the diplomatic proceedings, several memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed, formalizing agreements in key areas of joint development. These agreements seek to modernize and expand the existing framework of cooperation between the two governments. Beyond the presidential talks, the Prime Minister will hold separate courtesy calls with Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam. These meetings are intended to broaden the diplomatic engagement across the legislative and executive branches of the Maldivian government. The Maldives and Malaysia have shared diplomatic ties for 58 years, characterized by strong people-to-people connections and consistent high-level exchanges. This state visit serves as a milestone in reinforcing those longstanding bonds and adapting them to current economic and political realities.
