President Muizzu Welcomes Non-Resident Ambassadors from Six Nations to Strengthen Ties

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally received Letters of Credence from the newly appointed Non-Resident Ambassadors of Portugal, Bhutan, Austria, Burkina Faso, Turkmenistan, and Laos. The diplomatic ceremonies, held at the President’s Office, were marked by the traditional 'Haiykolhu' cultural procession and accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band. Following the formal presentations, the President held individual discussions with each envoy to explore strategic partnerships and reaffirm bilateral commitments. A recurring theme across the meetings was the promotion of tourism and the shared urgency of climate action, particularly in discussions with the Ambassador of Portugal, João Manuel Mendes Ribeiro de Almeida, and the Ambassador of Austria, Dr Robert Zischg. Specific regional cooperation was also highlighted, with the Ambassador of Bhutan focusing on the exchange of hospitality expertise, while the Ambassador of Burkina Faso, Dr Désiré Boniface Some, discussed infrastructure and fisheries development. The meeting with Turkmenistan’s envoy, Shalar Geldynazarov, centered on economic investment and connectivity, while the Ambassador of Laos, Vithaya Xayavong, emphasized exploring new avenues for mutual cooperation. These diplomatic engagements underscore the Maldives' commitment to expanding its global footprint and diversifying international partnerships. The relationships range from long-standing ties, such as those with Austria established in 1978, to more recent partnerships like that with Burkina Faso, established in 2011. By engaging with these six diverse nations, the Maldives aims to leverage multilateral cooperation to address pressing environmental challenges and stimulate economic growth through increased investment and tourism exchange.
