President Ratifies New Land Transport Act to Modernize Maldives' Traffic Management

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the new Land Transport Act, a comprehensive legislative overhaul designed to modernize the regulation and management of land transport across the Maldives. The Act follows its passage by the Parliament during the 28th sitting of the second session of 2026 on August 26. The new legislation introduces rigorous standards for vehicle registration, driving, and parking, while establishing clear operational guidelines for public transport services. By defining specific rules for vehicle use and introducing strict penalties for violations, the government aims to enhance road discipline and safety nationwide. Recognizing the unique urban pressures of the capital, the Act designates the Greater Malé Area as a "Registration and Traffic Management Controlled Zone." This strategic move addresses the critical mobility challenges caused by the region's high population density. To implement these changes, the law mandates the creation of the Greater Malé Transport and Mobility Office, which will oversee land transport delivery in the area for an initial three-year period. Furthering the commitment to public safety, the legislation establishes a National Road Safety Council to provide expert advisory services. Additionally, a dedicated fund will be created to finance the ongoing development and modernization of the national land transport infrastructure. The new Act will officially come into force 30 days after its ratification and publication in the Government Gazette. Upon implementation, it will repeal two outdated pieces of legislation: the Land Transport Act of 2009 and the Maldives Pedestrian Act of 1978, marking a significant shift toward a contemporary regulatory framework for the islands.
