Presidential Decree Facilitates Resettlement of Hirimaradhoo to Hanimaadhoo

Politics ·
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a Presidential Decree to amend the list of the nation's inhabited islands, facilitating the ongoing resettlement of Hirimaradhoo residents to Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. The decree ensures the protection of electoral rights for relocated citizens during the upcoming Local Council Elections, addressing administrative needs arising from the resettlement process. Under the law, citizens undergoing resettlement are considered electors of their new island. Consequently, Hanimaadhoo has been designated as the electoral constituency for all Hirimaradhoo residents, enabling the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) to prepare an accurate Voters’ Registry for the polls scheduled for April 4, 2026. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has guaranteed adequate housing and modern facilities for all resettled residents. The resettlement will be officially complete when the government announces that all residents have been registered in Hanimaadhoo, at which point Hirimaradhoo will be declared uninhabited.
