Prosecutor General's Office Submits 265 Cases for Prosecution in June

The Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) referred 265 cases for prosecution in June, marking a slight increase from the 263 cases submitted to the courts in May, according to the latest monthly performance statistics. The office experienced a significant surge in its overall workload throughout June. New cases received by the PG Office jumped by 59.4 percent, rising from 143 cases in May to 228 cases in June. One of the most notable increases occurred in the provision of legal advice to investigative authorities, known as duty prosecution. The office provided guidance in 683 cases during June, a 52.7 percent increase from the 447 cases handled in May. This rise indicates a higher volume of active investigations requiring legal oversight before cases reach the courtroom. In tandem with the rise in submitted prosecutions, the office reported an increase in courtroom activity. Prosecutors attended hearings for 1,207 cases in June, compared to 1,150 hearings in the previous month. To manage this growing caseload, the Prosecutor General's Office stated it is continuing to streamline its operations to improve efficiency and accelerate the prosecution process. As part of these structural improvements, the office has established specialized prosecution teams designed to offer targeted support to investigative agencies for specific types of crimes. Additionally, the PG Office is collaborating with relevant authorities to identify and remove systemic obstacles that frequently delay the submission of cases for prosecution, aiming to ensure a more timely delivery of justice within the Maldivian legal system.
