Prosecutor General's Office Withdraws Case After Settlement in Hulhumalé Assault

Local News ·
The Prosecutor General's Office has decided to withdraw a case involving an assault on a female sibling in Hulhumalé, Malé, after reaching a settlement of advice with the accused. The Hulhumalé Magistrate Court has consequently halted proceedings. The case stems from an incident on the evening of January 8 last year, when a man engaged in a verbal altercation with his sister outside a house in Hulhumalé. He allegedly kicked her in the calf, threw her to the ground, and injured her. Based on a medical legal report from a health centre and eyewitness testimony, the state filed a charge of assault under Qanoonul Huquqat (Law of Rights). While the trial was ongoing, the Prosecutor General's Office opted to resolve the matter through advice as permitted by the Criminal Procedure Code. On August 31 last year, a settlement agreement for advice and release was signed between the state and the accused. Under the terms, if any condition is violated during the period, the case will be resubmitted to court. The Office of the PG requested the court to withdraw the case, and the court has ordered that all related documents be returned to the Office of the PG.
