PSM Chairperson calls for greater inclusion of small nations in AI development at World Media Summit

Public Service Media (PSM) Chairperson Amina Namza has called for increased inclusion of all stakeholders in the development and maintenance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, and for stronger international support to highlight the rights and interests of small and developing nations. Namza made these calls while speaking at the 7th World Media Summit held in Beijing, China. She stated that it is the responsibility of governments, innovators, and media institutions to ensure that the benefits of technological advancement are provided to all communities without excluding any specific group. Namza noted that the danger of misinformation spreading through AI is increasing, emphasizing that responsible AI governance is not just about focusing on technical progress, but also about raising public awareness of the challenges arising as AI influence grows and preparing people for such changes. Highlighting the digital transformation efforts being undertaken by the country in line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s 'Maldives 2.0' vision, Namza stated that the success of technology cannot be measured merely by the digital resources established. Instead, she said that the true benchmark is the extent to which services are provided equally to citizens regardless of the island or place where they live. She expressed concern that because small nations have limited participation in building AI systems, their languages, cultures, and national realities are not adequately represented in the global data shaping the digital future. She stated that small island nations must play a significant role not only in producing AI but also in establishing international norms for its use. Namza stated that in an era where unverified and misleading content is increasing, the role of public service broadcasters is significant. She called for enhancing media literacy and for disseminating responsible and accurate information. She added that technological advancements must be built prioritizing human dignity and welfare, and that the true value of AI is measured by the benefits it brings to humanity.
