PSM Chairperson Urges Media to Amplify Community-Led Social and Environmental Change
Politics ·
The role of the media extends far beyond disseminating information; it is a critical engine for amplifying the grassroots initiatives that drive social and environmental transformation, according to Public Service Media (PSM) Chairperson Aminath Namza.
Speaking at the second plenary session of the Asia Media Summit, Namza argued that the most profound global changes often emerge from community-led actions rooted in collective responsibility rather than from institutional mandates or government policies. She emphasized that sustainable development is most effective when it originates from the ground up, driven by ordinary individuals taking ownership of their surroundings.
To illustrate this point, the session highlighted the Soneva Namoona initiative. This programme operates across various Maldivian atolls, focusing on improving waste management, eliminating single-use plastics, and advancing environmental education. Namza presented the initiative as a prime example of how targeted community engagement can tackle environmental challenges that disproportionately affect island nations.
For the Maldives, Namza noted that environmental threats are not abstract policy debates but daily realities. She asserted that this immediacy makes local involvement essential, as affected communities possess the intimate knowledge and motivation required to implement lasting solutions—details that distant policymakers might overlook.
Namza further discussed the 'amplification effect' of responsible journalism. She explained that when the media spotlights successful community-driven projects, it creates a ripple effect that transcends the original geographic context, inspiring other regions to adopt similar practices.
Concluding her address, the PSM Chairperson reaffirmed that storytelling is a force for positive change. She called upon media professionals to move beyond simple event reporting, urging them to recognize and magnify the ideas and actions that contribute to a more sustainable and conscientious society.
