PSM to Broadcast 2026 FIFA World Cup Free to Promote National Unity

Public Service Media (PSM) has announced that all matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be broadcast free of charge across its channels, prioritizing public interest and national unity over commercial gain. Speaking at the official launch of the coverage, PSM Managing Director Ahmed Shakeeb stated that the decision comes despite the significant costs and sacrifices required to secure the rights. All matches will be aired on TVM and Yes TV, marking the first time the tournament has been available entirely free to the Maldivian public. Shakeeb emphasized that football holds a unique power to bridge societal divides in the Maldives. He recalled the 2008 SAFF Championship as a pivotal moment when the sport fostered national spirit during a period of deep political division, suggesting that the upcoming World Cup could serve a similar role in bringing citizens together. With FIFA expecting a record-breaking global audience of approximately six billion viewers, PSM is positioning itself as the sole rights holder for the tournament within the Maldives. Shakeeb expressed gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for the government's support in facilitating the broadcast infrastructure. Beyond live match coverage, PSM plans to produce a suite of special programs and activities to engage viewers throughout the event. The Managing Director urged the public to embrace the tournament as an opportunity to celebrate friendship and shared national identity. The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This edition will see an expanded format featuring 48 teams competing across 104 matches. PSM confirmed it is fully equipped to provide comprehensive coverage, including real-time news and analysis, ensuring that every Maldivian has access to the global sporting event regardless of their financial means.
