Public Consultation Mandatory for Electoral Constituency Formation in Cities

Politics ·
The Elections Commission (EC) is now required to engage in public consultation when forming electoral constituencies in cities, according to a new regulation published on Monday. The regulation mandates that constituencies must ensure equality in population distribution and maintain the unity and order of the city. Additionally, the EC must establish a system to consult residents during the process. Each island will be designated as a single constituency, and city and island councils must provide registered population data to the EC three to five months before council elections. The regulation also outlines procedures for adding constituencies and determining female councilor seats. The next local council and Women’s Development Committee election is scheduled for April 4, 2025.
