Qatar’s Decades of Strategic Support Fueled Maldives Tourism and Economic Growth

World ·
Qatar has emerged as a cornerstone partner in the economic and tourism development of the Maldives, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This strategic partnership was solidified through the vision of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral ties and supporting the Maldivian state. A defining moment in this relationship was the launch of Qatar Airways flights to the Maldives. State Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Hameed revealed that the service began following a request from former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom. At the time, Qatar Airways was a modest operation without wide-body aircraft. However, the Emir mandated the launch regardless of potential profit, citing a desire to support a fellow Muslim nation. This commitment to the Maldives proved critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many international carriers suspended operations, Qatar Airways maintained its flight schedule. This lifeline allowed the Maldives to import essential medicines and emergency supplies at a time of global crisis. Today, the airline serves as a primary aviation partner, operating flights six days a week and linking the archipelago to a global network of destinations. Beyond aviation, Qatar’s support under Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani extended to the sectors of education and business. The former Emir’s personal visit to the Maldives further underscored the deep diplomatic bonds between the two nations. Minister Hameed also praised Qatar's exemplary advocacy for Palestine as a model for other countries. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is widely credited with the modern transformation of Qatar. His legacy includes the expansion of Qatar's tourism industry, the development of its massive natural gas and energy sectors, and the establishment of Al Jazeera as a global media powerhouse. These advancements helped position Qatar as one of the most influential members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), creating a stable and prosperous partner for the Maldives.
