Rasfannu Beach Reopens to Public Following Extensive Drainage and Facility Upgrades

The popular Rasfannu artificial beach in Malé has officially reopened to the public after undergoing a comprehensive renovation project designed to resolve long-standing infrastructure issues. The project, which commenced in April, aims to restore the recreational area's functionality and enhance the experience for residents and visitors. Inaugurated by the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, the upgrades focused heavily on environmental sustainability and water management. The Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC) led the technical overhaul, installing a new drainage system in the northern section of the beach to prevent flooding and water stagnation. To combat coastal erosion, MTCC replaced old embankments with modern culverts and modified the outer perimeter to ensure a more efficient flow of water across the site. Beyond structural repairs, the renovation prioritizes visitor comfort through the addition of essential public amenities. The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) was tasked with installing new drinking water fountains, toilets, and lockers, addressing a key demand from the community for better sanitation and convenience at the coastal destination. First established in 2016, Rasfannu was envisioned as a vital green and blue space for the densely populated capital. The beach was developed under the supervision of the Ministry during the tenure of current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who served as Housing Minister at the time. The area continues to serve as a hub for community life, featuring dedicated barbecue zones for families and specialized huts for recreational fishermen, alongside organized parking facilities. With the irrigation and drainage systems now fully operational and the new public facilities in place, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development confirmed that the area is once again available for leisure. The reopening marks a significant step in maintaining Malé's limited urban recreational spaces, ensuring they remain resilient against environmental challenges while serving the needs of the city's residents.
