Rathafandhoo Harbour Development Launches to Boost Island Connectivity

Politics ·
The harbour development project in Rathafandhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, has officially commenced with an inauguration ceremony led by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib. This initiative aims to enhance marine accessibility, addressing critical needs for the island's residents and visitors. Under the project, a new harbour measuring 905 feet in length and 300 feet in width will be constructed. The works include 70 metres of large stone revetment, 40 metres of groyne, and 280 metres of large stone outer channel for durability. Additionally, two navigation lights will be installed, and 464 metres of harbour channel will be developed, along with paving works to improve surrounding infrastructure. Heavy Force Pvt Ltd has been awarded the contract to execute the development, ensuring the project meets quality standards and timelines. The project aligns with commitments made during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's visit to Rathafandhoo in January last year. He emphasized that despite the island's small population, its needs remain important, and the harbour development reflects community aspirations for growth and improved access. Government officials state that upon completion, the harbour will significantly improve convenience for both residents and visitors, facilitating easier transport of goods, supporting local fishing industries, and potentially boosting tourism and economic activities in the region. In the Maldives, where island communities depend on sea transport, such infrastructure projects are vital for reducing isolation and promoting equitable development across the archipelago. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Parliamentarian for Faresmathodaa Ashraf Rasheed, and officials from Heavy Force Pvt Ltd, highlighting collaborative efforts towards this key development.
