RDC Begins $129 Million Road Modernisation Project for Baarah Island
Politics ·
The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has officially commenced survey work for a major road development and modernisation project in Baarah. Part of the government's strategic priority to accelerate infrastructure development across the atolls, the initiative aims to transform the island's transport network.
Backed by an investment of USD 129.52 million under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP), the project is scheduled for completion within 1,280 days. RDC confirmed that the current phase focuses on critical preparatory surveys required before construction begins.
The project will specifically target the island's ring road, excluding inland roads. Once complete, the initiative will provide 7.56 kilometres of newly paved road, significantly improving mobility and accessibility for the local community. To ensure the infrastructure is sustainable and resilient, RDC is conducting detailed topographical, geotechnical, and hydrological surveys.
Beyond the paving, the modernisation includes a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the implementation of an efficient drainage system to mitigate flooding. The final stages of the project will see the installation of essential safety and utility features, including road signs, speed breakers, traffic lights, and a dedicated street lighting network.
Pedestrian safety and urban aesthetics are also integrated into the plan, with the development of kerbstones and dedicated pedestrian pavements. The agreement for this extensive upgrade was signed on March 26, 2024.
Once operational, the upgraded network is expected to streamline transportation for residents and support the broader economic development of the region by providing a modern, durable infrastructure framework.
