RDC Begins $3.2 Million Road Upgrade Project for Nolhivaram Island

Politics ·
The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has launched essential survey work to begin upgrading the road network of Nolhivaram in Haa Dhaalu Atoll to modern standards. The project, valued at approximately USD 3.24 million, is part of a broader government initiative to prioritize infrastructure development across the Maldives' atolls. Currently, RDC teams are conducting topographic, geotechnical, and hydrological surveys. These technical assessments are critical components of the design and build phase, ensuring the infrastructure is suited to the island's specific geography and soil conditions before physical construction begins. The project focuses on upgrading two primary roads totaling 1.78 kilometers. Beyond simple paving, the scope includes the installation of a comprehensive stormwater management system designed to mitigate chronic flooding issues. The technical process will involve laying a durable aggregate base course before the final asphalt surface is applied. To enhance urban functionality and resident safety, the project will integrate several key infrastructure improvements. This includes the construction of pedestrian pavements, the installation of advanced drainage systems, and the leveling of utility junctions to prevent road hazards. Modern street lighting will also be installed across the upgraded routes. Safety remains a priority for the development. RDC confirmed that the project will include the installation of road markings, zebra crossings, speed breakers, and clear signage boards to protect pedestrians and motorists alike. Funded under the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP), the project is scheduled for completion within 720 days. Once finished, the upgrade is expected to significantly improve daily transit for Nolhivaram residents, replacing outdated paths with a reliable, all-weather transport network that supports the island's growth.
