RDC to Renovate Thimarafushi Recreation Centre and Develop Galolhu Futsal Ground

World ·
The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has secured contracts to modernize sports and fitness infrastructure in Thaa Thimarafushi and the capital city, Malé. The agreements, aimed at enhancing public health and athletic facilities, were signed at the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness. Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness, Abdulla Rafiu, and RDC Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem formalized the partnership during a joint ceremony. Under the terms of the first agreement, RDC is tasked with renovating the Thimarafushi Fitness and Recreation Centre. The corporation must complete the upgrades and hand over the facility within 180 days of commencing work. This renovation is a key component of a broader national initiative led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to cultivate a healthier population. The government’s strategic objective is to ensure that every island in the Maldives has access to dedicated fitness centres and outdoor gyms, decentralizing health and wellness resources for all citizens. Simultaneously, the RDC will oversee the development of a new futsal ground in Galolhu, Malé. The facility will be constructed on a vacant plot adjacent to the Gaakoshi Flats, with a dedicated budget of USD 98,657 allocated from the State treasury. This urban sports project is on a faster track, with a completion deadline set for 120 days. Together, these projects reflect a coordinated effort to integrate physical activity into the daily lives of both island residents and urban dwellers. By upgrading existing centers and creating new athletic spaces, the administration seeks to provide accessible environments for sports and recreation across the archipelago.
