Mousa Ali, a celebrated Dhivehi teacher who served the state for nearly five decades, has passed away at the age of 83. He died today while receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after being ill for several days.
Mousa Ali began his teaching career 68 years ago as a Dhivehi teacher at Hameediyaa School. He went on to teach Dhivehi subjects for many years in various schools, with his longest tenure at Aminiyaa School, which was previously dedicated to girls. He educated tens of thousands of students, many of whom became prominent figures in education and public service.
He retired in 2008, just two months shy of completing 50 years of service to the state. In recognition of his contributions to the Dhivehi language, Mousa Ali was awarded the General Service Commendation Award in 1996 and the Long Service Award in 2023.
Former Minister of Dhivehi, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, mourned his passing, describing it as "the star of a writer with experience in Dhivehi language and culture falling from the Dhivehi literary sky." He praised Mousa Ali as a role model for students and teachers in ethics, punctuality, dedication, eloquence, and wisdom. Adam Naseer also noted that Mousa Ali treated students with kindness and firm temperament, emphasizing the importance of building students' personalities on the basis of Dhivehi Islamic upbringing.
