Riko Moosa Returns to a Lead Role After 25 Years in Esa Shareef's 'Keeveh'
Entertainment ·
Maldivian actor Moosa Manik — best known to film audiences as "Jinni Jinaa" and widely recognised in political circles as Riko Moosa — is set to appear in a lead role for the first time in 25 years, in the film "Keeveh," directed by Esa Shareef.
The film marks the return of Moosa to a leading part since 2001, when he starred alongside Mariyam Nisha in "Naunmeedhu," directed by Fathimath Nahula. It is also the first film Esa Shareef has returned to direct after 22 years. Esa Shareef previously directed "Fathis Handhuvaru," in which Moosa played the role of "Jinni Jinaa" in 1997.
Popular film star Sheela Najeeb will also be seen in "Keeveh" alongside Moosa. Shooting for the film has been completed, and its premiere has been scheduled for the 25th of next month.
Speaking about his return, Moosa said: "After 25 years, I am appearing in a film. There are many reasons for this. From the beginning of my life, I have actually been known to people as a film actor. Therefore, if anything needs to be said, it is applause. And I have always wanted to act in films."
The film is also the highest-priced ticket release among films in recent history. VIP Golden Tickets have been launched and are being sold for Rf400, which the report described as an opportunity for supporters eager to watch the return of a "legend."
Riko Moosa began his film career with the feature film "Iththafaq" and went on to act in more than 30 films and dramas, including popular titles such as "Dheriya," "Ginihila" and "Naunmeedhu." He won the Best Actor award for his role as Shaheed in the film "Hagu," released in 1996. He also won Best Actor of the Year and Best Supporting Actor at the Aafathi Awards, and Best Supporting Actor at the National Film Awards.
After leaving the film industry, Moosa entered politics, serving in prominent roles including as chairman of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Deputy Speaker and a member of the People's Majlis, and also in the PPM. While in politics, he also became a successful businessman.
His most recent appearance was in the 2024 film "Lasviyas," directed by Mohamed Niyaaz (Teddy), in which he played a special role. His return to the film field is something many in the industry have been waiting for, and the reasons behind it will be known through "Keeveh" on the 25th of next month.
