Road Development Corporation Begins $13.5 Million Infrastructure Upgrade Across Three Shaviyani Islands

Politics ·
The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has officially launched road modernization projects across three islands in Shaviyani Atoll, marking a significant step in the government's priority to upgrade regional infrastructure. The initiatives will target Kaditheemu, Maroshi, and Goidhoo, with each project scheduled for completion within 730 days. These Public Service Investment (PSI) programs involve substantial financial commitments tailored to the needs of each island. In Kaditheemu, a $4.94 million agreement signed on October 13, 2025, will see seven roads developed. Maroshi is set for an $3.89 million upgrade covering eight roads, following an agreement signed on August 7, 2025. Meanwhile, Goidhoo will receive the most extensive work, with ten roads slated for development under a $4.70 million contract signed on October 25, 2025. The modernization effort goes beyond simple paving. RDC will install established pavements, integrated drainage systems, and street lighting to improve safety and accessibility for residents. A key feature of the government's strategy is the flexibility of the design; the administration has assured that islands will not be forced into uniform paving if it does not suit their specific needs. In a move to protect local economies, islands with thriving local tourism industries will maintain their traditional sand roads. For these locations, the focus will shift toward solving chronic drainage and flooding issues. The government plans to achieve this by providing necessary heavy machinery and collaborating with local councils to ensure resources for ongoing road repairs are readily available. By tailoring infrastructure to the demands of the residents and the unique environmental needs of each island, the government aims to improve quality of life without compromising the natural appeal that drives community tourism. Surveys are currently underway to finalize the technical requirements before full-scale construction begins.
