Road traffic operations reduce accident numbers by 36 percent: Police

Local News ·
The police have stated that the number of traffic accidents occurring on the roads has decreased by 36 percent following the traffic operations launched by the police. The police said that the latest operational statistics compiled by their service show a very hopeful picture. Accordingly, the police have noted that the number of reported accidents has decreased to a noticeable extent in connection with the activities conducted and the increased policing on the roads. Looking at the results of "Operation Reckless Driving," which was launched on the 8th day of this month under the guidance of the Commissioner of Police, the police have stated that accidents have been reduced by 36 percent during the 20 days that have passed since the operation began, compared to the 20 days before the operation started. This represents a reduction of 43 accidents compared to the 117 accidents that occurred before the operation, and the police have stated that a total of 74 accidents occurred during that period. The police say that seeing such a significant decrease in accidents in places like Hulhumalé, which have long and wide roads, is evidence that public attention on the roads is increasing. At the same time, the police have stated that positive results have also been observed from the activities carried out by the Traffic Police and Road Management in Malé. Accordingly, while 128 accidents occurred in Malé's roads from the 21st of last month until the end of the 7th day of this month, the police have stated that this number has been reduced to 106 from the 8th day of this month until the end of the 24th day, with special measures. The police said that this is a reduction of 22 accidents, or a good change of approximately 17.2 percent. The police say that these figures are not the end of the work and are strong evidence that travel is moving in the right direction through everyone's efforts. Regarding the Hulhumalé operation, the police have stated that a total of 3,151 vehicles (2,800 motorcycles and 351 four-wheeled vehicles) will be checked from the 8th day of this month to the 27th day. Among them, the police have stated that 808 individuals (735 motorcycle riders and 73 four-wheeled vehicle drivers) may have been advised and counseled instead of taking action. However, the police have stated that 23 vehicles (20 motorcycles and 3 four-wheeled vehicles) driven in ways that endanger the safety of others, as well as 85 individuals without licenses for the category of land vehicles being driven, were fined, and 145 vehicles were towed. The police have stated that road safety is not something that can be concluded at a specific time or through a specific operation. Furthermore, the police have stated that road safety is everyone's right and it is a national responsibility that everyone must jointly fulfill.
