RTL Ferry Service Transports 1.6 Million Passengers as Nationwide Expansion Nears

World ·
The Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry system has transported approximately 1.6 million passengers since its inception four years ago, according to the Ministry of Economic Development and Transport. Speaking on the 'Trade Desk with Ana' program, Deputy Minister Ibrahim Yasir emphasized that the government utilizes meticulous data tracking to refine service delivery. By analyzing travel patterns and passenger volumes across different zones, the ministry aims to optimize routes and improve the overall efficiency of the network. Currently, the RTL network employs a zoned system of high-speed ferries and buses to connect various atolls. Zone 1, which encompasses Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani Atolls, has emerged as the most established segment, facilitating roughly 1,000 passenger trips every day. What began as a pilot program in three atolls has expanded to 15 atolls across the archipelago. Under the directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the government is moving aggressively to close the remaining gaps in the network. Operations are scheduled to launch in Meemu Atoll later this month, with the remaining Zone 3 atolls—Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, and Vaavu—to follow shortly thereafter. To ensure a smooth rollout, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is currently conducting island-wide awareness campaigns in Meemu Atoll. These information sessions are designed to educate residents on the new schedules and ticketing processes before the service becomes operational. The government intends to achieve full nationwide connectivity by the end of the year. Once complete, the system will provide affordable and reliable transportation for all citizens, significantly improving access to essential public commuting and critical healthcare services across the islands.
