Ruling PNC Secures Majority of Seats in Local Council and WDC Elections

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has released the final results of the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, confirming a victory for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). Following the conclusion of the second-round run-off elections on April 18, the PNC emerged as the dominant party, securing 584 seats. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) followed closely as the second-largest force in the local governance structure, winning 563 seats. In addition to the two primary political parties, 169 independent candidates successfully won seats across the various councils, reflecting a significant presence of non-partisan representation in local administration. The elections featured a total of 1,351 candidates competing for positions across the archipelago. The voting process, which began on April 4 and extended into the run-off stage, concludes a critical cycle of democratic engagement aimed at strengthening grassroots governance and women's representation in the Maldives. The Local Government Authority (LGA) has now finalized the schedule for the next phase of the transition. All newly elected officials are scheduled to attend the official oathtaking ceremony on May 17, where they will formally assume their duties and begin their terms in office.
