Ruling PNC Secures Two Seats in LGA Board Election

Politics ·
The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has successfully won the election held to determine the members appointed to the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board. Under the Local Government Act, three members need to be elected to the LGA Board: one member elected from among city councilors, another member elected from among island councilors, and a third member elected from among the chairpersons of committees working for the development of women. Since only Malé Mayor Mohamed Athif contested the position that needs to be elected from among city councils, he was elected to that position without an election. Therefore, what was held today was an election for two members to be appointed to the LGA from among island councilors and chairpersons of committees working for the development of women. As a result of the election held today from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, both elections were won by the PNC. The party has successfully won the position of member to be appointed to the LGA from among island councilors and the position of member to be appointed to the LGA from among chairpersons of committees working for the development of women. In today's election, the right to vote was granted to 807 individuals. These are 625 councilors of the councils and 182 chairpersons of committees working for the development of women. The LGA stated that the temporary results of the election will be announced tonight and that the permanent results will be announced on November 3 in accordance with the regulations.
