Russia Attacks Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure in Violation of Trump Agreement

World ·
Russia attacked six energy production facilities and gas stations in Ukraine within hours after US President Donald Trump announced that attacks on energy industry infrastructure between Ukraine and Russia had been suspended, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has alleged. Speaking to Fox News, Zelensky described this as a response to Trump by Russian President Vladimir Putin. In these attacks targeting various regions of Ukraine, 33 people were injured, while a power plant in Izium was destroyed, and Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk suffered power outages. In connection with these attacks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Ukraine is not entitled to any relief from halting the war. Additionally, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that a drone attack hit a 25-story building in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, killing one person and injuring 11. Although British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and France supported suspending ongoing attacks on energy facilities and energy industry infrastructure, the European Union (EU) said it would consider it a sustainable agreement only if the suspension of attacks continues. As oil prices are rising ahead of the US midterm elections, Trump has pressured Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil facilities in order to facilitate the import of Russian diesel into the US. However, Zelensky describes this relief from sanctions measures as a "gift" given to Putin. On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry said that drone attacks had been carried out on three cargo ships and a logistics center carrying military cargo to Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea coast. This includes one vessel traveling to Mykolaiv and two vessels traveling to Odesa. Ahead of winter, both countries have more than doubled attacks on energy facilities. Zelensky said he supports Trump's agreement as an important step toward ending the war if the US ensures respect for Russia's energy agreement. However, he continues to allege that Russia is violating the agreement even though Ukraine did not attack.
