Russian Tourist Arrivals Surge as Maldives Surpasses 100,000 Milestone This Year

Russian tourist arrivals to the Maldives have officially surpassed 100,000 for the first time this year, establishing Russia as the second-largest source market to reach this milestone behind China.
According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, 100,450 visitors arrived from Russia as of April 18. This represents a significant 26.3 percent increase compared to the 79,509 arrivals recorded during the same period last year, signaling a strong growth trend in the Russian market.
Overall, the Maldives welcomed 786,529 tourists during this period, though this figure marks a 4.8 percent decline compared to 2023. Tourism authorities attributed this slight dip to temporary flight cancellations triggered by geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East. However, the sector is showing signs of a steady recovery as airlines resume their scheduled operations, with the country now averaging approximately 6,600 arrivals daily.
China continues to lead as the primary source of visitors with 116,441 arrivals. Other high-performing markets include the United Kingdom with 71,454, Italy with 65,038, and Germany with 52,555. The top ten list is further rounded out by India, France, the United States, Switzerland, and Australia.
Air travel remains the dominant gateway for international visitors, accounting for 776,178 of the total arrivals. The vast majority of these travelers, totaling 766,175, entered through Velana International Airport in Malé, while Gan International Airport in Addu City recorded 3,245 arrivals.
The surge in Russian visitors underscores the Maldives' successful efforts to diversify its tourism base, ensuring that the economy remains resilient despite regional volatility in other parts of the world.
