Saudi Arabia Provided $488 Million in Development Support to Maldives Since 1978

Saudi Arabia has contributed approximately USD 488 million to development projects and programs in the Maldives since 1978, marking a significant pillar of the bilateral relationship between the two nations. Speaking in a message to commemorate Saudi Arabia’s 96th National Day, Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani emphasized that this cooperation is rooted in deep ties of Islamic brotherhood, mutual respect, and a longstanding friendship. The financial support, channeled through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), has targeted critical sectors essential for national growth, including infrastructure, housing, healthcare, water and sanitation, and transport. Ambassador Al-Qahtani noted that the partnership is evolving beyond financial aid, expanding into political, economic, educational, and Islamic spheres. He expressed appreciation for the Maldives' diplomatic positions toward the Kingdom, describing them as a reflection of solidarity and enduring friendship between the two peoples. Looking toward the future, the Ambassador affirmed Saudi Arabia's commitment to deepening ties in high-growth areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education, and technology. He urged both nations to translate their historical bond into practical partnerships that directly contribute to the prosperity and wellbeing of their respective populations. Al-Qahtani also highlighted the internal transformation of Saudi Arabia under the leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He pointed to the Vision 2030 program as a catalyst for economic diversification, innovation, and tourism within the Kingdom. Saudi National Day commemorates the unification of the Kingdom under its founder, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud. In his concluding remarks, the Ambassador extended his greetings to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and the people of the Maldives, expressing optimism for a future of continued prosperity and strengthened diplomatic relations.
