Saudi Arabia Seeks New Maldives Investments in High-Level Talks

Politics ·
A high-level Saudi Arabian delegation led by Deputy Investment Minister Sarah Al-Sayed has arrived in the Maldives to launch substantial economic partnership talks. The visit aims to significantly expand investment cooperation beyond traditional aid frameworks and identify new commercial opportunities. The delegation includes senior government officials and private sector representatives, demonstrating Saudi Arabia's serious commitment to exploring diverse Maldivian economic sectors. The Saudi Embassy in Malé confirmed the talks will focus on realizing concrete investment opportunities that benefit both nations. This diplomatic engagement builds on a relationship established in 1981 and follows last year's Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen bilateral economic ties. Saudi Arabia has been a major development partner through the Saudi Fund for Development, which has provided over USD 470 million for Maldivian infrastructure projects. The substantial funding has supported critical sectors including transportation, health, housing, and fisheries. A notable USD 100 million commitment specifically supported construction of Velana International Airport's new passenger terminal. With numerous Saudi companies expressing strong interest in the island nation, current discussions could formalize new commercial ventures that move beyond aid toward mutually beneficial partnerships.
