Save Maldives Raises Alarm Over Widespread Uprooting of Coconut and Ancient Trees by State Institutions

Environment ·
The environmental association 'Save Maldives' has expressed deep concern over the increasing destruction of coconut trees and ancient trees across the Maldives, blaming negligence by state institutions including government offices, island councils, and schools. In a statement, the association highlighted that these trees serve as natural defences against climate change and extreme weather, particularly with rising sea temperatures and the El Niño effect posing health and environmental risks. Despite existing environmental protection laws, institutions are violating regulations with impunity. Specific incidents cited include the uprooting of coconut trees by the HDh. Vaikaradhoo Council, cutting of a 100-year-old banyan tree at HDh. Kumundhoo School, destruction of a historic banyan tree in R. Rasmaadhoo, felling of the only banyan tree in K. Maafushi for a restaurant, damage to the water reservoir in K. Vilimale', and removal of an ancient tree at ADK Hospital in Malé. Save Maldives warned that these actions have direct and indirect negative impacts on the social, economic, and health well-being of citizens and called on all residents to take a stand to stop such environmentally harmful activities to protect the rights of future generations.
