Seven New Parking Structures to Add 3,600 Spaces in Greater Malé Area

Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced a major infrastructure project to tackle chronic parking shortages across the capital region. Seven new parking facilities will be developed in the Greater Malé area, collectively providing over 2,600 spaces for cars and 1,000 for motorcycles. Minister Ameen made the announcement via social media, sharing proposed design images for the structures. He stated the initiative is being undertaken under the directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The primary goals are to increase parking capacity, ease traffic congestion, and reduce illegal roadside parking, ultimately creating safer roads for all residents. The project's financing was confirmed by President Muizzu during a meeting with residents of Henveiru in December 2025. The development will be funded through a Line of Credit (LOC) from India. According to the plan, two parking structures will be built within Malé city. One additional facility will be developed in Vilimalé near the bridge, and another will be constructed in a conveniently accessible location in Hulhumalé. The specific locations for the remaining three structures were not detailed in the initial announcement. Minister Ameen described the project as a significant step toward improving overall mobility and urban management in the densely populated capital region, where vehicle ownership has steadily increased alongside development.
