Shahid Slams Government’s New Civil Service Dress Code as Overreach
Politics ·
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has strongly criticized the government’s recently introduced civil service dress code, calling it an attempt to control citizens’ personal lives and a violation of constitutional rights. In a post on X, Shahid accused the government of eroding individual freedoms, particularly targeting women with measures designed to intimidate and exclude them from public spaces. He argued that the new rules, which specify clothing lengths and styles for female employees, prohibit hair dyeing, and mandate coverage of the neck and hips, are part of a broader effort to restrict personal liberties. Shahid emphasized that the government’s actions lack meaningful progress and instead resort to intimidation tactics. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu introduced these reforms based on public feedback, adding specific dress standards for male and female employees. Shahid’s comments have sparked widespread debate over the balance between workplace regulations and personal freedom.
