Shangri-La Reopens in Addu City: A New Chapter for Tourism in the Maldives
Economy ·
The Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa, one of the largest resorts in the Maldives, has reopened its doors to tourists after a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. This reopening marks a significant milestone for Addu City's tourism sector. The resort had initially closed in April 2020 due to the global health crisis, impacting the local economy. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration played a crucial role in facilitating the resort's reopening. The government undertook extensive efforts to ensure the resort was fully operational, including addressing financial challenges and negotiating a 30% government stake in the resort. Over 500 employees have already been rehired, with more opportunities expected to arise. The Ministry of Tourism highlighted that the reopening of Shangri-La will boost Addu City's tourism industry significantly, creating numerous job opportunities and revitalizing the local economy.
