Shifaz Calls on Maldivians to ‘Change This Treacherous Government’ Ahead of LGA Elections

Politics ·
Former Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Shifaz, has called on the people of Maldives to be ready to change what he described as the ‘treacherous’ government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Speaking at an MDP rally held on Wednesday night, Shifaz strongly criticized the government’s spending, including the purchase of drones and the Rasmale land reclamation project. He alleged that the government spent $34 million on drones using funds not available in the budget and that the Rasmale project also began with unbudgeted funds, paying $800,000 per day to reclamation entities. Shifaz claimed that $1 billion has been spent so far and questioned where the country’s dollars are being used. He described the government’s actions as ‘deceit and Judaism,’ saying it is a ‘great injustice and betrayal’ for the people. He also criticized the handling of Rasmale lands, saying that after previously talking about providing housing to the Dhivehi people, these lands are now being sold cheaply or given away for free. With the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board election scheduled for Sunday, October 31, 2026, Shifaz urged MDP councilors, WDS presidents, and independent members from every island to participate and win the election. He expressed confidence that the results will show President Muizzu has no support in any part of the Maldives, weakening the government and paving the way for change.
