The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that a critical shore protection project on Funadhoo Island in Shaviyani Atoll is on schedule for completion by June, providing a long-term solution to persistent beach erosion threatening the community.
MTCC reported that 73 percent of the initiative is already finished, with dredging, revetment backfill, and rock boulder profiling works currently underway. Specifically, 48 percent of revetment structures have been installed, 72 percent of land reclamation is complete, and beach nourishment stands at 64 percent completion. The company assured that this comprehensive effort will effectively address the island's erosion challenges.
Funadhoo, serving as the capital of Shaviyani Atoll, is home to approximately 2,800 residents, with about 2,500 living on the island itself. This infrastructure project is part of broader government development plans finalized for the island, aiming to enhance resilience and livability for its population.
