Shujau Accuses Past MDP Government of Historic Looting and Loan Accumulation

Member of Parliament for Baarashu Constituency, Ibrahim Shujau, has accused the former Maldivian Democratic Party government of taking out loans in unprecedented amounts and plundering the nation's assets.
Speaking during a parliamentary session today debating a bill on Goods and Services Tax amendments, submitted by the government's representative for Kolamafushi Constituency, Ibrahim Didi, Shujau remarked that the MDP came to power promising to run the country with a laptop from an uninhabited island, but instead ended up selling off all the country's hard assets.
Shujau highlighted that the current government, under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has been successfully steering the country towards a stable economy. He noted that the changes brought by international financial institutions to the Maldives' rating indicate the country is now on the right path. He described the situation on November 17, 2023, as critical, stating the country was in dire straits and that the current administration is working to rectify the issues.
"In the five years of the MDP government, they sold all the hard assets of the country. They sold the shares of Dhiraagu. They sold the water company. They sold the international airport. Who had the strong policy? Was it the MDP or the PNC?" Shujau questioned.
Shujau further stated that MDP members would not understand how development projects are progressing in the islands. He said the current government is moving forward by paying off debts while simultaneously advancing development projects needed by the people.
