Six Opposition Parties Slam 2026 State of the Nation Address as Lacking Vision

Politics ·
Six opposition parties have issued statements criticising the 2026 State of the Nation Address delivered by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, describing the speech as ineffective and accusing the government of failing to present a serious plan or vision for addressing the country's problems. In response to the President's address, the parties said they were not satisfied with what was presented. Several stated that the speech did not propose a serious plan for resolving the nation's problems. Some parties described it as "a failure to confront the past," "a plan that does not work," "a false vision," "a policy that does not work," and "an ineffective policy." One party described the speech as "a repetition of the past." The six parties that responded were the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the People's National Congress (PNC), the Jumhooree Party (JP), Gaumee Itthihaad, the Adhaalath Party, and the Maldives Development Alliance. One party said the speech did not reflect a genuine commitment to solving the country's problems, and that the administration had shown no plan for dealing with unemployment, housing shortages and rising living costs. Another party said the President's speech was weak in content and that the government has failed to deliver on its promises since taking office, adding that the country needs new solutions rather than the continuation of old policies. Some opposition parties said the address was more a display of political performance than a genuine discussion of the country's challenges, and that it failed to address the most urgent issues facing citizens. Other parties said the speech was repetitive and that the government has been unable to provide leadership on key national issues.
