Small Businesses Drive Economic Growth as Maldives Celebrates MSME Day

World ·
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) serve as the backbone of the Maldivian economy, providing essential support to families and local communities across the archipelago. This was the central theme emphasized by SME Digital CEO Badhurudheen Hassan in a message released to mark Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Day. Badhurudheen highlighted that the value of these businesses extends beyond simple commerce, noting that every small venture contributes to the broader economic stability and development of the nation. By fostering local entrepreneurship, MSMEs create diverse employment opportunities and stimulate growth in island economies. To commemorate the occasion, SME Digital collaborated with the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, and the Business Centre Corporation (BCC) to organize the MSME Fest 2026. Held at Hulhumalé Central Park, the festival features approximately 30 local businesses showcasing their products and services through dedicated stalls, providing a vital platform for visibility and networking. Complementing the physical festivities, Public Service Media (PSM) is broadcasting a special telethon on TVM. Running from 10:30 am to 11:00 pm, the program aims to educate the public on the operational aspects of small businesses and share success stories from the sector. Digital engagement is also a priority for this year's celebrations. SME Digital has launched several social media initiatives, including the “Tag Your Favorite MSME” campaign, which offers cash prizes to encourage consumer interaction. Additionally, the “CaptureMSME” photography competition is currently underway, inviting participants to visually document the societal role of small businesses. The series of events will culminate in an MSME Day awareness program. This collaborative effort involves SME Digital, the Bank of Maldives, the Huraa Council, and the Business Centre Corporation, focusing on providing entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge necessary to scale their operations in a competitive market.
