Small Businesses Drive Sustainable Growth for Local Island Economies, BCC Chief Says

Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the fundamental engine behind the economic progress of islands across the Maldives, according to the Business Center Corporation (BCC). In a statement commemorating Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, BCC Managing Director Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed emphasized that these businesses are vital for the sustainable advancement of local island economies. He noted that the productivity of small enterprises does more than just drive localized progress; it strengthens the broader national economy and revitalizes community life. Ziyau described SMEs as the central backbone of the Maldivian economy. He praised the sector's ongoing efforts to generate employment opportunities, foster innovation, and establish a stable foundation for nationwide economic development. He further assured that the BCC remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering these businesses by creating more avenues for growth and opportunity. To mark the occasion, the BCC and SME Digital, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, are currently executing a nationwide initiative. This follows a series of government efforts designed to propel the growth of the small business sector. One of the most successful state-led initiatives highlighted was the 'Maldives Expo.' The exhibition successfully attracted significant investor interest, effectively broadening the pathways for various local enterprises to secure the capital and partnerships necessary for expansion. By shifting the economic focus toward sustainable, locally-led enterprises, the government aims to reduce dependency on centralized hubs and ensure that the benefits of economic growth are felt across all atolls.
